Description

Answer the following questions as if you were giving advice to a student teacher.
How would I introduce a
discussion of my approach
to instructional design?

Standards guide my instructional content and backwards design is the most effective planning technique to implement them in my classroom.
What are my resources
for designing units and
lessons?

Pacing guides, curriculum maps, blooms taxonomy, teacher literature for best practice reference.
What do I generally
do first?

Identify standards and develop WHOLE objectives to support them.
How do I interact with
the standards?

I try to explore and manipulate the standards in multiple ways. During individual lesson planning, discussing subject matter and specifics with students, and making clear, meaningful connections across the curriculum.
What are my constraints
and how do I respond
to them?

Time is my biggest constraint. More time would provide more understanding and development in my planning. Allocating appropriate amounts of time for planning and not trying to perfect each and every aspect of the curriculum in every lesson is something I continue to work on. Curriculum development and planning is an on-going learning experience and not something that is always immediate. Learning through planning and instructional experiences and applying new knowledge is important for me and my students.
How do I approach
student assessment?

Student assessment is frequent and flexible. Checks for understanding are done in written and oral formats, students assess themselves and each other.
How do I approach
post-assessment?

Based on the subject matter while being appropriate and meaningful for students to reflect upon. Multiple formats utilized here as well.
How do I approach
self-assessment?

I welcome it every chance I get. I want to constantly improve and know the specific skills I should concentrate on to be an effective educator.
What are areas I would
like to learn more about
and/or become better at?

I would like to continue working on creating well developed WHOLE objectives.
What final advice would I
give about my approach to
instructional design?

Instructional design is always a work in progress. I think that if I ever feel I have it all figured out, I should probably retire because education is constantly evolving and I need to keep evolving with it.
